‘OM DIE DAM’ ULTRA MARATHON

A splendidly scenic route that winds its way around Hartbeespoort Dam, the “Om Die Dam” (Around the Dam) race continues to grow every year.

DUSI CANOE MARATHON

The biggest canoeing event in Africa is a major challenge and a popular event. A 120 km race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban the surroundings are spectacular. The event began in 1951 and is completed in three stages.

Stage One This stage is 26 miles (42 km) long and extends from the uMsindusi River through to Dusi Bridge, with 9 miles (15 km) of forced portage.

Stage Two Stage Two of the race is a grueling 28.5 miles (46 km) long and extends from Dusi Bridge to Inanda Dam, with a flatwater paddle across the dam, which is some 7 miles (11 km) long. The confluence of the Mgeni River and the uMsundisi River creates an added challenge during this part of the race.

Stage Three
Starting from Inanda Dam, this stage is 22 miles (36 km) long and ends in Blue Lagoon, in the capital city of the province. It includes a 6 mile (10-km) flatwater paddle across the dam.

Planet earth’s most storied ultra-marathon is a South African institution. REED DANCE

This ancient annual tradition of the Swazi and Zulu people continue to take place centuries after the ceremony known as the Umkhosi woMhlanga, or the Zulu Reed Dance was first performed. In early September at the Enyokeni Royal Palace in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal thousands of Zulu girls pass a virginity test before being led by their senior princess and proceed to carry the reeds, singing, and dancing in their traditional intricately beaded dress.

After the dance, the King makes a speech and some of the girls will find a suitor (approved by the girl’s father). It is a unique and sacred South African traditional festival that few are lucky enough to attend.

Africa’s biggest and best kite festival attracts over 20,000 enthusiasts including the biggest names in kiting. A full entertainment program runs with the kite-flying and all proceeds go to the Cape Mental Health charity.

BARRYDALE IN BLOOM

A gem lying in wait in the Klein Karoo, Barrydale in the Western Cape is littered with charm, character and historical appeal and surrounded by vineyards, orchards, mountains, and valleys.

When the town throws open its door to all comers gardens, homemade delights and handmade crats are all on show.

LITCHI FESTIVAL

Salt Rock on the spectacular Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu-Natal continues to host a festival of fresh flavor amid sun, sea, and sand. Beginning on the 15th of December the festival continues until the last litchis have been plucked from their orchards.
