Every safari we here at Rothschild Safaris design is fully customized for every client. The safari camp your neighbors loved in Botswana may not be right for you. How do we know? We’ve been there.
At almost any given time, someone from our office is off inspecting new properties, meeting with guides, checking out the wildlife and just getting the scoop on what’s happening on the ground in Africa and beyond. Ruthie, one of our amazing travel designers, recently returned from Southern Africa, armed with the latest news from the ground and some must-visit destinations for 2017.
It’s all about Rhinos at Kwandwe
Kwandwe, located near Port Elizabeth in southern South Africa, is not only a beautiful lodge. Here you can spend 3 – 4 hours tracking rhino with a specialist ranger and tracker team. Learn about the habits of this threatened species, the issue of rhino poaching as well as Kwandwe’s own conservation efforts.
But if you want an even deeper conservation experience, you can also participate in Kwandwe’s exciting rhino-darting and notching program. Under the supervision of experts, the rhino is darted in order to plant microchips into the horns and perform ear-notching for future identification – an essential task to ensure the preservation of this endangered species. The best time is generally 1 May – 30 September due to cooler weather conditions, however it can be done all year. The procedure is always subject to the availability of the wildlife management team as well as the availability of rhinos that need to be notched for conservations purposes.
Green Kalahari?
When most people think of the Kalahari they think of dry, barren desert. Well, there is one area of the Kalahari, located in northern South Africa, where you can actually experience a green landscape. If you’re looking for something really unique and special, and appreciate vast wilderness, you’ll love Tswalu Kalahari.
In addition to vast landscapes, this is also the best place in South Africa for viewing meerkat, pangolin, and brown hyena. Other wildlife spotted here includes rhino, buffalo, Wildebeest, cheetah, meerkat, lion, zebra, and giraffe.
The Warmest Camp in South Africa
We love Tanda Tula, a warm hearted, owner run tented camp, with every creature comfort to keep you comfortable and cozy during your safari.
Head here to have a look at the Big 5. The waterhole right in camps is visited by elephants and buffalo nearly every day. Leopard are often spotted walking thru camp at dinner time.
Up for more adventure? We love their Field Camp, an exclusive use, customized, expedition style tented camp that is easy to get to, quick dive into the deep bush. What a great opportunity to really switch off from the outside world.
Footprints in the Sand
And finally, now more than ever we are crazy about Mozambique. The people are lovely and friendly and the beaches are…. well, the best!
How does a remote safari style experience on the beach sound? Azura offers impeccable service and a wide range of activities. Be prepared to immerse yourself in the relaxed Mozambican lifestyle. What does this mean exactly? Be prepared to leave your shoes in your room. Dinner is served on the beach so you can literally go barefoot all day!
