Tswalu Kalahari is South Africa’s largest private game reserve, now protecting over 110,000 hectares of spectacular grasslands and mountains. Here conservation is a top priority, and the reserve lives our it’s vision to “restore the Kalahari to itself.”
No more than 30 guests at a time can discover the beauty of this arid savannah, its diverse wildlife and the serenity of what is one of our favorite wilderness spaces.
Sleep out deck!
One of our favorite experiences here is the sleep-out deck. The deck is called Malori, which means ‘dreamer’ in Tswana, the local language. This is a fabulous experiences to sleep safely in the wilderness, under the fabled “diamond skies.”
From a distance, Malori looks like another sociable weaver’s nest on the horizon. But as you approach, you can see a raised platform and a thatched overhang with weather-proof blinds for protection.
Choose to sleep under the thatch or for a more freeing experience, simply roll the bed onto the open deck with thousands of stars above you!
How it works
You will be taken in your private vehicle to Malori, spotting game along the way within the rolling Kalahari dunes. Not only do these dunes make for a stunning backdrop, but the hills actually provide a sheltering influence which increases the biodiversity of the area enormously.
Over 80 species of mammals can be found on the reserve, together with approximately 240 species of birds.
Once you arrive at Malori, your guide will set up sundowners and canapés while you take in the panoramic views and a stunning sunset on the open savannah.
Your guide can then prepare dinner for you, or you may opt to do so yourself, making the most of your own private Kalahari as the sun sets before you and the moon rises behind you. Wake at sunrise to the sound of birdsong and enjoy a game drive back to the main camp.
