About Leora Rothschild, Southern Africa is her home away from home!
I am from South Africa (now living in Denver, Colorado). I spent years traveling through Southern Africa, taking groups to some of the most remote areas within Africa. If you have a question, ask me, I am certain to know the answer. We always try to incorporate those very raw, authentic and off the beaten path experiences into our clients trips as this is what I experienced growing up, traveling with my family to the bush, sleeping under the stars and sitting around a camp fire. To me that is Africa, not the large Game Lodges, not the fancy swimming pools (which certainly have their place ie. with kids) and not the focus being on food. Yes you will stay in amazing camps, eat incredible food and perhaps even have a pool here and there but focus should be first and foremost on the wildlife. That is what Africa is all about and that is what we at Rothschild Safaris focus on when planning safaris for our clients. I have a solid and incredible team who have travelled extensively themselves throughout Africa and are just delightful to work with. South Africa’s Wildlife Reserves

When to go
One of the main reasons tourists travel to South Africa is to view the unique and diverse wildlife. S At many of the parks you can view the Big Five (elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, rhino).  Most the parks and reserves allow the wildlife to roam freely, and without human intervention. The best way to see the wildlife is in the private reserves where safaris are conducted in open specially modified 4X4 Land Rover.  Your safari guide & tracker typically take you out on twice daily game drives, getting you close to the wildlife.  Other activities include night drives and bush walks.

The private reserves in Kruger National Park (including Sabi Sand Reserve & the Timbavati) Excellent June-November / Good December-May

Where to stay – choosing the right accommodations for your trip
Rothschild Safaris does not own individual camps in Africa; instead, we have contracts at every lodge allowing flexibility and more importantly, variety for your individual taste. Each year, our safari planners travel to the camps to personally experience the accommodations, activities, the best seasons for game viewing, meals and service. The Western Cape

When you are in Cape Town there are so many wonderful tours and activities to partake in, below are just a few of our favorites:
Table Mountain – You can take the cable car to the top for spectacular 360° views of the city or enjoy a good hike to the top and cable car down.
Robben Island – A good glimpse into the life and times of the apartheid era.
Victoria & Albert Waterfront – Enjoy fish and chips and an ice cold beer while watching the seals and boats in the working harbor.
Greenmarket Square – purchase some great interesting African curios and a great place to people watch.
Cape Point & Cape Peninsula National Park – A fascinating scenic drive past coastal towns to the treacherous cliffs forming the most southwestern tip of Africa.
Chapman’s Peak – One of the most scenic coastal drives in South Africa.
Cape Winelands – Breathtaking vistas and majestic mountain backdrops, surrounded by Cape Dutch architecture and steeped in history. We suggest you spoil yourself and enjoy a lovely lunch on one of the beautiful wine estates.

Garden Route

The Garden Route runs along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in South Africa and has been described as heaven on earth – a visual gem with exquisite African scenery and untamed coastline.

There are so many wonderful places to visit and activities to do, here are just a few:

Ostrich Farms – Visit a local farm for a hands-on experience.

Birds of Eden – The largest single, free-fight aviary in the world.

The Cango Caves – There are several types of dripstone; stalagmites, stalactites and helictites.

The Elephant Park – The well-informed, friendly guides will teach you all about the sad and mystical Knysna elephants, the world’s Southernmost elephants. A rare opportunity to touch, feed and take photographs.

Featherbed Nature Reserve – Take a cruise around the nature reserve and to the Heads to see the whole area from a unique viewpoint.

Monkeyland- This world-class multi-primate sanctuary is the world’s first free-roaming sanctuary.

Treetop Canopy Tours – This tour is found in the magnificent Tsitsikama forest at Storms River, and consists of 10 platforms and 10 slides, the longest of which is 100m.

Golfing – Home to some of South Africa’s top golf courses.

Johannesburg

Typically Johannesburg is merely a stop over for a night on your way into South Africa (due to flight connections).  While here you may enjoy a few tours including:
