New places always make us look at life differently.

There is a delicious rush of discovery and adventure when a new camp opens on the Safari circuit. These are the new camps we are excited about in 2019.

New in Zimbabwe

Chikwenya

Situated on the eastern boundary of Mana Pools National Park, Chikwenya’s seven tents stand on low wooden decks connected to the main area through pine walkways. A photographer’s paradise, the view is of the open floodplain and the broad Zambezi River, with a backdrop provided by the mountains of the Rift Valley escarpment.

The camp is open from April until mid/late November. The Natal mahogany and albida trees surround the camp with a dense forest that provides deep shade from the heat of the day. Animals, especially elephants, come to eat the albidas protein rich pods as they shed them.

New in Zambia

Mapazi Camp

Only three walk-in tents stand in the new walking-only camp that is located in the far north of Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park. All the activities are privately guided by the storied owner, and legendary master guide Deb Tittle. She has over 20 years of guiding experience in the South Luangwa with 15 years doing walking safaris. If you are searching for a top-class true safari experience capped by incredible guiding then Mapazi should be on your bucket list.

Walking Safaris where pioneered in Zambia and Mapazi stands in an undisturbed section of the park. The rustic camp is very comfortable and natural enough to allow bushbuck to wander right through. Views over the river are a real draw.

The camp is reached by a Fly and drive transfer that arrives into Mfuwe Airport from Lusaka before taking a 4-5 hour game drive through the park.

Mapazi is open from June – October.

From April

Nyamatusi Mahogany, Mana Pools, Zimbabwe

Nyamatusi Mahogany will open in the remote eastern region of Mana Pools on the banks of the Zambezi River. A deluxe, family-friendly camp (children of all ages are welcome) that has been designed to offer an authentic safari in the very wildest part of Africa. Four guest tents (two standard suites and two for family use) will offer air conditioning, a mini-bar, a tea and coffee station and a safe. Accommodation is fully inclusive of all meals, a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, all game activities, national parks fees, transfers between camp and the local Mana Pools airstrip and laundry service. Nyamatusi Camp can be exclusively booked from the 1st of April until the 30th of November.

The view from every tent and the common areas will be incredible and perfect for spotting wildlife. A circle of cushioned seating around the campfire is the perfect spot for telling stories of the day’s activities. Lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo can be found in the vicinity and can be seen from a game drive, a walking safari (for all over 16), canoe trips and catch and release fishing. The younger children can join nature walks around the property.

From the end of May

Lekkerwater Beach Lodge, De Hoop, South Africa

De Hoop is one of the most incredible coastal reserves in all of Africa. Within the eastern, most exclusive area of beauty and blissful seclusion you will find Lekkerwater Beach Lodge.

Between July and November, some of the best whale watching on the planet will be right on your doorstep. It is the ultimate land-based, marine safari.

Seven rooms are located on 3.7 miles (six kilometers) of private beach and feature floor to ceiling glass windows to make the most of the view. The rooms are interspersed with rock pools and fish life with fynbos, a plethora of marine life and a rare vulture breeding colony.

From August 2019

Singita Kwitonda, Rwanda

The legend of Kwitonda, a silverback known for his humility and gentleness, lives on in a new lodge and villa set within 178 acres of land on the edge of Volcanoes National Park. With over one-third of the world’s mountain gorillas as its neighbors, Singita Kwitonda is being built with an ultra-light footprint. Every detail has been carefully considered. The traditional dry-stone walls were built by the local community and 60,000 tree saplings have been planted in a reforestation effort. Kwitongo Lodge and Kataza House on the park border will function as a buffer area between agricultural plots and the gorilla habitat.

The gentle regenerative spirit of Rwanda has been the inspiration of the contemplative, nurturing space that is being created throughout the eight suites and the four-bedroom villa. Trekking to see the gorillas is within easy reach and guests can also enjoy the golden monkeys from the Afro-montane forests of Nyungwe National Park and the primordial Lake Kivu as well as Kigali the vibrant and sophisticated capital of Rwanda.

From December 1

Cheetah Plains, Kruger Park, South Africa

This new addition to Kruger Park was designed by the renowned ARRCC architects. And ARRCC collaborated with South Africa’s leading as well as up-and-coming artists to showcase the art of the country throughout the three, exclusive use, contemporary, designer bush villas which have been named after two of the Sabi Sands leopards and a dominant lion coalition — Mvula, Karula, and Mapogo.

Every four bedroom villa can accommodate eight guests and has a private chef, twice daily game drives a private spa therapist and a central gym facility. Transfers from Arathusa Airstrip are included.
