Though cheetah cubs are absolutely adorable and are now being carefully protected and monitored, the reality is that they are facing extinction.
The illegal animal trade is partly responsible, but nature is a cruel mistress, especially for cheetah cubs, with just 5% surviving to adulthood. Other predators frequently kill young cubs, despite being kept in hiding by their mothers for their first six weeks, but habitat loss also has a huge impact.
Fortunately, scientists are ‘cautiously optimistic’ of recent efforts to protect their numbers.

It is a constant marvel of nature that, within just moments of being born, a creature can stagger to its feet and be ready to flee. At @kicheche_safari_camps, the magic of life is seen in every moment, but this little foal had a particularly miraculous entry into the world.
As guests observed the birth, they noticed a pride of lion watching over the proceedings from a rocky vantage point. Yet despite their attention, they didn’t move. Perhaps, as Kicheche guides suggested, it was the distinctive, disorienting patterns of the pair’s stripes that distracted the lion from an easy lunch.
Whatever the reason, we are thankful that this little foal managed to canter away on wobbly legs to join the rest of the herd.

The Khoisan or San people of Botswana and Namibia have an absolutely fascinating culture and way of life, subsisting on a foraged diet in the more arid Kalahari and Makgadikgadi regions.
Their language, along with South Africa’s Xhosa, has become famous for incorporating tongue-twisting clicks into its words. Difficult enough for western speakers to replicate, there are actually several types of clicks, just as we have numerous letters, with five different variations identified.

The fascinating waterways and jungles of the Ecuadorean Amazon are teeming with life and one of the most biodiverse locations on the planet.
Into this richly abundant ecosystem plunged Rothschilds operations coordinator Aimee Olson, in the first chapter of her South American adventure.
To the guttural bellows of howler monkeys, Aimee discovered caiman, turtles, numerous bird and monkey species, fascinating tribal cultures, curious indigenous foods and a towering jungle brimming with life from forest floor to towering treetop.

The elaborate headdresses of the Samburu are deeply symbolic, each gender and each stage of life being reflected and represented by the design of their colourful headwear. These wonderful creations are almost never removed, only replaced when a youngster becomes an adult, marries or takes on a specific role within the tribe. Even the vibrant beads have meaning, the green, yellow, white and red representing pasture, harmony, purity and blood respectively.
Meeting the Samburu at @lewa_house and discovering their fascinating culture is a rare and cherished experience for our guests.

The fabled ghost elephants of Etosha are honoured in myth and legend, their spectral white masque giving them an otherworldly appearance that captivates the superstitious mind. In reality, elephant skin is deceptively sensitive, and under the hot Namibian sun, elephant roll in mud to protect themselves from sunburn, insect bites and dehydration.
