We’ve all heard of the Great Migration, a major spectacle where wildebeest, gazelle, and zebra trek 1,200 miles from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya and back again. The Great Migration is truly an amazing spectacle, with large predators following the migrating prey.

But, did you know that there are several other wildlife migrations in various parts of Africa to see too? Consider the following:

  1. Kalahari Desert Elephant Migration – During the rainy season, elephants will move into the Kalahari, where they can find pools of water. During the dry season, the elephants move toward the Okavango Delta.
  2. Songbirds – One of the biggest migrations in the world is undertaken by a modestly tiny wheatear songbird, which weighs less than 2 tablespoons of salt. The wheatear bird migrates over 9,000 miles and ends in eastern Africa.  http://www.livescience.com/18475-songbird-migration-africa.html
  3. Whales (Cape Town) – Whales of many types make their way past Cape Town each year July through November. Humpback whales make their way from the Antarctic to the tropics, enjoying sardines along the way. Southern right whales also pass in the serene ocean.  http://www.fodors.com/news/whale-watching-south-africa-7045.html
