It is difficult not to play favorites with Safari Properties in Zambia.

But it is also impossible to pick only ONE favorite, favorite – so instead, we give you Six!

Chinzombo

Back in the 1970s, the old Chinzombo Camp was the green season base for the legendary Norman Carr Safaris. Today the property has been reincarnated as one of the most luxurious properties in Zambia. Award-winning architects Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens designed the camp to retain its bush credentials with grass and canvas walls allowing the large living areas to melt into the surrounding wilderness.

We love how this property combines luxury with a traditional bush feel, including grass and canvas walls and spacious living areas that melt into the exquisite surroundings of the beautifully tranquil and wild location.

Here you’ll find just six spacious villas, all highly contemporary in construction and fittings and one family unit with two bedrooms. All villas feature a large private deck and plunge pool.

The camp is set within 60 acres of private land and the view from its Luangwa Riverside location teems with wildlife. Private, direct access into one of the most game rich areas of the National Park make this a truly special Safari destination.

Chinzombo Camp is the perfect base from where to explore the majestic wilds of the Luangwa in style, luxury, and exclusivity – all year round. It also features on our ‘Best Safari Baths‘ list, our ‘Certified for Romance‘ list and as a suggested Summer destination for Southern Africa.

One of our favorite itineraries combine South Luangwa with a camp in the Lower Zambezi where you can canoe, tiger fish or simply enjoy spectacular sunsets over the mighty Zambezi River.

Conservation credentials: When acquiring Chinzombo’s location, a portion of the proceeds funded the relocation of black rhino to North Luangwa National Park, where the North Luangwa Conservation Programme operates a rhino breeding and reintroduction project.

Mchenja

Set beneath a magnificent grove of ebony trees on the banks of the Luangwa River, Mchenja is an elegant and intimate tented camp, consisting of five tents raised on wooden decks in the heart of the national park.

Each suite delivers stylish comfort whilst maintaining an authentic Safari experience with a private en-suite open-air bathroom plus Victorian style baths with a river view. Watching large herds of elephant crossing the Luangwa is a frequent camp highlight. The central lounge is built around one of the old fallen Mchenja (ebony) trees. Brunch is taken in the shady lounge but dinner is more often served on the river bank under the stars.

Explore the region’s diverse habitats with our award-winning guiding team. The game viewing in this area is superb, with leopards and lions sometimes wandering through the ebony grove in search of prey. Night drives are usually very rewarding, with the bush revealing a different nocturnal surprise every time.

View wildlife from the camp, or from an exciting open game-viewing vehicle. We love the guides’ encyclopedic knowledge of the plants, animals and small things of the Luangwa that will make your Safari one to remember.

Mchenja is excellent for both walking and game drives and the level of personal service is outstanding.

Conservation credentials: Mchenja is part of a Foundation that contributes over $300 000 per year to community, health, education and wildlife conservation.

Chundukwa

There is always that bit extra we expect when a property is owner run, and Chundukwa River Lodge delivers exactly that. A truly authentic encounter only 15.5 miles (25 km) from Livingstone.

Artisan built, the five chalets and family house are all individually decorated and designed to draw the guest to the breathtaking views over the Zambezi to Chundu Island and the Zambezi National Park. Luxury, romance, and the African wilderness are carefully balanced.

The property specializes in one-to-one experiences on classic sunset cruises, cultural village tours, birding trips, outrides on Chundukwa horses and trips to Victoria Falls.

Chundu Cottage is great for small groups and families traveling together.

Chundukwa makes our ‘Family Friendly’ recommendation list. Read what Holly said about her family staying at Chundukwa.

Conservation credentials: Under Zambian born owner Doug’s care, Chundukwa is a sanctuary for wild and domestic animals.

Tongabezi

Tongabezi Lodge is a romantic hideaway right on the banks of the Zambezi River, just upstream from the Victoria Falls. It is the perfect base to return to after enjoying the variety of activities offered at the Victoria Falls.

Wine and dine beside the river on your private terrace. Soak up the exclusive ambiance and private river views from your bathtub. Enjoy a romantic Sampan floating candlelit dinner as you are served floating on the Zambezi river. Guests are offered a range of complementary activities. In keeping with its famed individual approach to hospitality there is no set itinerary, so you are free to book every excursion at a time that fits perfectly with your idea of the ideal holiday.

Tongabezi itself is an experience not to be missed. Although it was built years ago, the design remains unique across Africa. Where Tongabezi leads other designs follow.

Royal Chundu

Leora recently helicoptered into Royal Chundu and she loved it! This is tranquility wrapped in romance and adventure with Victoria Falls only 18 miles (30 km) away. Both the River Lodge and the Island Lodge has kaleidoscopic views of the Zambezi River with the suites set into the riverine vegetation. The Island Lodge lies on the Katombora River, sheltered by enthusiastic rapids.

Colonial décor reminds guests of the lives of the early explorers and spa treatments and Zambian cuisine – both featuring natural African ingredients, round out the experience.

Royal Chundu is a sure win for all romantic travel.

Conservation credits: From a community school to employing local villagers and empowering women, Royal Chundu is a force for the better.

Sausage Tree

The Lower Zambezi National Park boasts 120 km of Zambezi Riverfront with a concentration of game between the water and the magnificent Zambezi Escarpment. Sausage Tree Camp sits in this pristine location, sleeps only 18 guests and provides a very civilized approach to an authentic bush experience.

From the idyllic Lap Pool on the river’s edge to the ultra luxurious custom Safari tents that are generously spaced allowing elephants to amble in between.

Stay at Sausage Tree if the view really matters or when it is important to enjoy individual activities privately.

Conservation credentials: Sausage Tree Camp supports Conservation Lower Zambezi, a non-governmental organization which supports the Zambian Wildlife Authority and local communities to protect the wildlife and habitat of the Lower Zambezi National Park.
